Wycoller Riparian Habitat Restoration

Wycoller Brook is a formative brook of Colne Water in east Lancashire. The Brook has suffered historically fromd rainage of the upland, pollution and destruction of riparian habitat. This has resulted in it failing to meet the ecological standards required under the Water Framework Directive. Through detailed surveys and analysis the priority work required for the site is the creation of woodland in the riparian zone, and exclusion of livestock from the water course. RRT has developed a riparian fencing and tree project, that will reduce diffuse pollution from agriculture, prevent faecal matter from livestock entering the water course, stabilise eroding river banks, reduce flood risk, and provide shading to reduce water temperatures. All of which aid in mitigating the effects of climate change, increasing and protecting the aquatic species present such as Trout, Kingfisher and Dipper, and encourage new species such as otters.
