You, the Scientist

You, the Scientist will provide a permanent laboratory-style environment where science centre visitors can step into the shoes of real scientists and carry out experiments for themselves. By creating this novel facility we aim to:

1. Give families a realistic science experience where they can learn about “being a scientist” as well as learning about science.

2. Provide an accessible facility for a broad cross-section of the North-East population, particularly communities from Tyne and Wear.

3. Enable children to see and appreciate the value placed on science and technology by their parents and carers. (There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that this perception of parental interest is the dominant influence future subject and career choices).

4. Increase participants’ confidence with science and their appreciation of its relevance to their lives.

5. Increase interest in and engagement with science and technology (enhancing the effect of outcome 2 using the mechanisms of outcome 3).
