Byrnna Woods and Llanharan Marsh Community Nature Reserve (3)

The reserve has a number of protected species, such as otter, dormouse, several bat species and marsh fritillary butterfly. The project will focus specifically on managing and creating habitats for these species. Such management will include the creation and management of ponds and scrapes for otter and reptiles, diversifying the marshy grassland for the benefit of marsh fritillary and creating a number of artificial shelters such as bat roosts and otter holts. For bats, a number of the old mine adits and buildings on the reserve (as part of its industrial heritage) will be made safe and transformed into bat houses for roosting bats.

The project will also engage with academic institutes so that opportunities to undertake scientific research on the reserve can be made more readily available to students and volunteers.

To promote the project, people engagement will be a core element; this will be undertaken by local volunteer work parties and by undertaking educational walks and talks.
