Developing & protecting the ancient plum orchard at Tiddesley Wood

To plant a new plum orchard of approximately 100 trees in the field next to the existing ancient plum orchard at Tiddesley Wood Nature Reserve. Many trees in the existing orchard are dying of old age. As these trees fall into complete decay it is essential to replace them. Traditional orchards support many features which make them valuable to wildlife. Decaying wood is an important refuge for invertebrates and birds, the trees are valuable hosts for mistletoe and lichens, the fruits are an important source of food for birds and the blossom is an important nectar source for invertebrates. The aim of our project is to extend the existing ancient orchard by planting new trees for the future, to ensure that this important habitat is protected.
