Berwick Village Green, Nr Lewes, – Village Pond Restoration (1871/DA)

The aim of the project is to firstly the removal of the invasive New Zealand Pygmy weed (Cressula Helmsii) which is covering 2/3 of the surface of the pond. Removal to be carried out with small diggers, with disposal at burial site in nearby local field in accordance with Environment Agency guidelines. This process will also serve to reduce the amount of silt in the pond, giving more depth. Secondly the removal of the goat willow that is growing in the pond, and removal/pollarding of the larger willow trees at the pond boundary. Removal using chainsaws to reduce height, tractor and chain to remove tree stumps. Most wood to be removed to local site for burning, with some used for pond landscaping. Finally the sympathetic replanting with native flora and trees to enhance biodiversity, and the building of hibernacula to create habitats for reptiles and amphibians.

The Trust grant will contribute towards the pond restoration.
