Hangman’s Wood Tree Planting and Bat Boxes

Hangman’s Wood is an important local public open space that contains the “Daneholes”. These old underground workings provide excellent winter hibernation site for bats; they are SSSI. The woodland itself is an ancient oak and ash wood, used by many people, including students en route to school or college. Many of the ash trees became diseased, and it is essential to replace them to preserve the nature of the wood. At the same time, additional fencing will be provided to make the daneholes safer, and bat boxes installed to provide summer roosts for the bats, and bird boxes to sustain habitats until the trees mature. (Note: this project also qualifies as a bio-diversity project, as well as a public open space) (both bats and ancient woodland are on the Thurrock bio-diversity action plan).
