Rebuilding of the spire of St Mary’s Priory Church, Monmouth

The spire of St Mary’s is a central landmark in the town, dominating the view of this historic town from the medieval bridge up the main street. The spire is presently unsafe, and must be rebuilt if the character of the town is to be preserved. Bell ringing is currently prohibited. The spire consists of masonry blocks on a timber frame, and to make it safe and restore it to usable condition requires disassembly of the top 6 metres, reconstruction on a stainless steel frame, and replacement of many damaged and corroded masonry blocks.
