Reinstatement of Native Crayfish & their Habitat in the Mid-Wye

Powys LBAP targets’ Restoration of Natural Systems’ on rivers and streams and ‘Retain existing native crayfish populations and encourage return to pre 1980 range’. Native crayfish abundant in the 1980’s are now scarce or lost from Mid Wye streams. This process is reversible through habitat management and species manipulation based on our previous studies. We will identify preferred improved habitat thought monitoring, research the effect on crayfish of bank erosion, siltation and point effluent discharge, investigate the problems/possibilities of native crayfish reintroductions to extirpated sites and problems of rearing for release – all under CCW licence
