The Westonbirt Wood Project

To renovate the arboretum’s Wood Centre, making the life cycle of wood, and the whole journey a tree takes, an accessible and educational experience for the visiting public. This improvement will also ensure that trees are made the most of, even at the end of their lives, becoming quality craft and construction materials, rather than wood chip or firewood.

The project will take place in three stages:
-First, purchasing a sawmill, which will allow timber to be milled going forward and to develop the construction materials needed for the second stage;
-Second, constructing two timber-framed barns. One will house the sawmill and the other will provide a space for storing and drying wood.
-Third, restoring the heritage cattle shed to create a covered craft demonstration area, craft workshop, and shop where the public can purchase timber and handcrafted wooden items.
